Shea and I don't have an oven. Ok, so that's technically not true, we do have an oven, it just doesn't work like it should... or at all.
So the other day, me, thinking that I'm going to be the hero and having a little bit of a man moment, i decide that I'm going to pull the whole range out of its secured place in the counter, unscrew whatever needs unscrewing and fix the problem...
Not so much... After about an hour of fighting with the range, unscrewing more screws than i could find spots to screw them back into, and cutting my hand open i was left with.... Well, an oven that did not work and a bloody hand. So no oven, but one will be coming soon i think, now that i have a job (oh, yes i have a new Job! yay! ...kinda more on that in another post) i can afford to help pitch in a bit. :-)
Ok, with all that said, no oven, but the range still works and that is good enough for me. For now. So your still wondering were the name of the post comes from... I'm getting there. ( I'm just excited to be writing again i cant help it)
Alright, here we go Donuts! So with the oven out of commission i have turned my cooking to all things stove top. Now of course breakfast is no problem on the stove top, but i have not been eating all that much of that lately because it seems that for breakfast for Shea and i, Starbucks has been getting our business more often than not. So that has left me to consider lunch and dinner and because i was often eating alone, (someone had to work...) left overs became my friend. So whats left? Snack food and Desserts. Thus, we get to Donuts, or are they Doughnuts? Now that depends on who your asking, i know what Dunkin would say...
So after messing around with sugar (Taffy, brittle, and fudge) and Chocolate (Peanut butter cups and the rest of the stuff did not really work out for me) i moved on to doughnuts.
My first attempt was exactly that, an attempt. They turned out more like hockey pucks with a hole in the center. I did make some interesting toppings for them, but no matter what you would have put onto of them they still broke one or two teeth as you bit into one of the deceiving doughnut looking rocks.
So i learned a few things from that experience. One of which was that I'm not a good enough baker to not use a recipe when trying something for the first time. Another was that all things fried in oil, do not necessarily taste good. And still another was that i really wanted to eat a good homemade doughnut!
So i tried again... and it worked. Ill let the pictures do the talking.

The Dough and the "bench proofing" you can see my cutting instruments on the right. (a metal ramekin and a shot glass)
The frying! (These things would be good for you if it was not for this step... and i the toppings too... well whatever.)
So these are the finished plain doughnuts, I later glazed them with a regular glaze and a Chocolate glaze. They were great. I was pretty excited about them as you can probably tell based on this post.Don't worry we did not eat all of them. Shea took most of them to the staff at Houston's and they made short work of them.
Next step... The doughnut/coffee shop.... we will give it some time...

Here's my donut recipe:
1. Turn on the car
2. Drive to Tim Hortons
3. Order a Boston Cream Donut
It makes a little less dishes :)
(or pop open a can of biscuit dough, cut holes and fry in 1 inch of oil...shake in a bag of sugar...YUM!)
